Police had a gruesome experience when they responded to a call from residents of the Taman Pelangi flats in Bukit Mertajam, Selangor, Malaysia on Tuesday.

They found the badly slashed and naked body of an Indonesian man in a bedroom at one of the units on the fourth floor of Block E.

The deceased’s penis and testicles had been chopped off and left next to the body. An Indonesian woman who was found injured in another bedroom in the unit has been arrested.

The woman, who had bruises on her face, was taken to the Seberang Jaya Hospital where she was admitted. She is in her 30s. It is learnt that she was still in a state of shock Wednesday.

Police also recovered a broken piece of the window pane glass which is believed to be the murder weapon, as well instruments for consuming drugs.

The woman had valid travel documents but police were investigating if the deceased, who was either in his 30s or 40s, was in the country legally.

Central Seberang Prai acting OCPD Supt Mohan Singh said the murder was believed to have been committed as early as 4am that day as several residents heard a loud quarrel and the throwing of things.

“We have yet to determine the relationship between the man and woman. We will investigate on the motive. We are also checking whether there was a quarrel between the two or if there was involvement of a third party,” he said.

Supt Mohan Singh did not reveal the identity of the victim whose body was sent to the Seberang Jaya Hospital for a post mortem.

He urged those with information or had witnessed the murder to contact investigation officer ASP Mohd Naim Asnawi at 019-5728844 or the nearest police station.

Sex sells, as they say -- in movies, TV serials and books. David Brazil's bookNo Money, No Honey was purportedly a best-seller in Singapore, Malaysia and a few other countries. First published in 1998, it examined the sex industry in the squeaky clean island republic across the Causeway. Sex hotspots like Geylang and Orchard Tower were vividly described. The book went through four annual reprints without any updating, with David laughing all the way to the bank.

After having read it, I had wanted to emulate his daring efforts, in the hope of making a quick buck. So I hatched a plan to write a book of the same genre called Bachelor's Guide to Kuala Lumpur, using the pseudonym "Eric Schubert." When I approached a publisher with the idea, he was interested. On my second visit to his Bangsar Baru office, he wasn't only interested, he was excited. He revealed that through his sources, he had checked the sales figures for No Money, No Honey, and they were pretty impressive. Rubbing his hands gleefully, he added: "If this book sells, we can come up with a series -- another on Bangkok and even a third on Manila!"

Two months of field research, interviews and writing passed before the manuscript was completed. Alas, it was sheer ecstacy to hold the hot-from-the-press final product in my hands. In a sense, my book was not a quintessential sex guide as nightspots for business entertainment, dating and drinking; spas for pure relaxation; and dangdut lounges for dancing were also covered. When it came to true-blue sinful spots, their real names and addresses had been changed.

A month later, I visited my publisher again. He broke the bad news. Major book retailers whom he had approached refused to take Bachelor's Guide to Kuala Lumpur. Vulgar language was not used; neither was there any erotic prose. Was it because our book retailers were scared of running foul of the law by seemingly promoting prostitution? Was it because it would give KL a bad image? Well, whether one likes it or not, all foreign visitors to our capital city knows an underground sex industry exists. Anyway, all my efforts went down the drain. MyBachelor's Guide to Kuala Lumpur, written ten years ago, never saw the light of day.

Recently, I read a paperback titled Undercover in Jakarta by Moamar Emka, which saw sales of 200,000 copies in Indonesia. Written in English, it chronicled the writer's sex adventures in Jakarta. I am once again tempted to do another take on our capital city's sleazy hotspots as well as clean nightspots. Any courageous publisher out there? Maybe times have changed.

Kuala Lumpur: The Consumer Association of Penang state has complained that Tamil and Hindi movies screened in Malaysian theatres showed "violent and steamy scenes" although the films were vetted by the censorship board, a media report said Monday.

The association's education officer N.V. Subbarow expressed doubts if the board had carried out its job thoroughly, suggesting that some of the committee members "could be unsure of their responsibilities", Tamil language daily Malaysia Nanban reported.

"It is a fact that some Tamil and Hindi movies had given rise to many social problems among the younger generation in the country," he said, commenting on board secretary S.Thanasegaran's statement that the committee was very strict in editing violent and steamy scenes in films.

Subbarow said he is surprised that there are 11 members in the committee but still there are films shown in theatres with violent and vulgar scenes.

He suggested the censor board should have standard guidelines on violent and vulgar scenes so that all the members are aware of their roles and uniformity is ensured.

Tamil language films, as also Hindi films and their actors, are popular in Malaysia that is home to 2.1 million ethnic Indians.

Doctors at the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital, where the deceased was admitted on Friday after a heart problem and low blood pressure, said the patient was suffering from unstable angina with cardiogenic shock. The patient died at 4.55am Saturday.
The deceased had failed in a bid to carry a woman¿s name in the identity card after undergoing a sex change in Thailand two years ago.
The family, adhering to a High Court ruling, buried the deceased as a man at the Kampung Seberang Takir Muslim cemetery at 4.30pm.
Mohd Ashraf stirred the nation when the court rejected an application on July 18 to change his gender and name to Aleesha Farhana Abdul Aziz.
Judge Datuk Mohd Yazid Mustafa ruled there was no legal statute to grant the application based solely on a sex-change operation.
He said a person¿s gender was determined at birth and could not be changed through surgery.

Mohamad Ali Rustam, chief minister of southern Malacca state, said the moves could help reduce a growing problem of babies being abandoned by girls who have unwanted pregnancies.

Muslims are permitted to marry after reaching puberty in Malaysia, as long as they obtain consent from their parents and Islamic Shariah courts. Nearly two-thirds of Malaysia’s 28 million people are Muslim.

For non-Muslim Malaysians, however, girls must be at least 16 and boys 18 to marry. Underage marriages are not common, and authorities have voiced
concern that unmarried teenagers are having sex, sometimes resulting in young mothers killing or abandoning their babies.

Encouraging teenagers to marry could be “a good way to solve the problem” of babies being dumped, Mohamad Ali said. “These people, you can’t just stop them from having sex,” Mohamad Ali told The Associated Press. “Muslim girls also want to enjoy (sex).”

Officials in Malacca plan to start providing 500 ringgit ($160) in financial help to young couples who want to get married. They are also considering building a special school for girls who become pregnant, since regular schools would expel them, Mohamad Ali said.

So far this year, Malacca authorities have recorded 174 babies born out of wedlock, he said. Fourteen were to girls under age 16 and 60 to girls between 16 and 20. Three babies were found abandoned. Similar problems have been reported in other Malaysian states.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Muslim holy month of Ramadhan is also a time to strengthen community relations.

Many Muslims in Malaysia come together to prepare a traditional porridge called "bubur lambuk", which is ideal for breaking fast.

During Ramadhan, an alley behind one of the oldest mosques in Kuala Lumpur, Masjid Jamek Kampong Baru , is turned into a massive kitchen churning out hundreds of pots of gooey porridge.

Over 130 volunteers prepare this nutritious porridge, that's become a popular traditional treat for Muslims, where tens of thousands of packets of porridge are given to the public for free.

For over 50 years, "bubur lambuk" is prepared the same way using the same ingredients.

More than 15 ingredients go into making the dish such as rice, garlic, ginger, onions, meat and seven different types of spices. The porridge is cooked and simmered over slow fire for two hours.

While the recipe is no secret, what exactly makes the Masjid Jamek's "bubur lambuk" so special?

Munir Aki, a third generation chef at Masjid Jamek Kampung Baru, said: "It's the way it's cooked. All the steps must be followed correctly. Don't cut corners."

He said while the young are keen to learn, "they don't follow the steps exactly because they are always in a hurry.''

Hj Munir, 76, said it used to take him at least four hours to cook the porridge.

But his successor said the porridge tastes just as good even when the cooking time is cut by half because of modern technology such as blenders and gas stoves.

Zainal Abidin, a fourth generation chef, said: "I am really proud because Jamek Kampung Baru's "bubur lambuk" is well known everywhere."

The organising committee of Masjid Jamek intends to keep the more than 50 year-old tradition alive by getting the younger generations involved.

Idris Shaari Mat Aris, chairman of Masjid Jamek, said: "It's good for Muslims to do this during Ramadhan. The people here, whether Chinese, Indians or Muslims can celebrate Hari Raya together."

Chile police break up student protest in Santiago

Riot police in the Chilean capital, Santiago, have used tear gas and water cannon to break up demonstrations by students demanding educational reform.

Dozens were detained as they tried to march to the city centre despite a warning that the protest was illegal.

Chile has seen weeks of rallies by students and teachers demanding reform and more investment in education.

President Sebastian Pinera has pledged extra funding, but student leaders say his offer is not enough.

Protesters are calling for the government to take control of the country's public education system, saying the current system is underfunded and unequal.
'Time has ran out'

Riot police moved to clear the demonstrators as they tried to rally in Santiago's Plaza Italia in the city centre. At least 130 students were arrested, while two police officers were reportedly injured in the scuffles.

Earlier, some officers had clashed with activists who had set up street barricades using burning tyres.

Interior Minister Rodrigo Hinzpeter had warned that the protests were illegal and would be met with force.

"The time for marching has run out," he said on Thursday.

Camila Vallejo, a spokeswoman for the striking university students, called it a "state of siege".

"I imagine it must have been like this 30 years ago," she said, referring to Chile's 1973-90 military dictatorship.

"Even the right to congregate in public places isn't assured," she said.

On Monday, Mr Pinera presented a 21-point package of reforms and asked centre-left lawmakers to hold talks with him to end the dispute.

The proposal offered to increase funding, improve teacher training, increase university scholarships and help resolve unpaid student loan debts.

But opposition lawmakers declined the invitation and students said the offer failed to meet their demands.

Chile sets aside 4.4% of the country's GNP for education, less than the 7% recommended by Unesco.

Kings of Leon have cancelled their US tour amid reports of problems within the band.

The cancellation comes three days after frontman Caleb Followill left the stage during a show in Dallas, Texas.

He said he was no longer able to sing because of "heat exhaustion and dehydration".

But his brother, bassist Jared Followill, said in a tweet that the band has "internal sicknesses & problems" that go beyond dehydration.

"I can't lie," he wrote. "There are problems in our band bigger than not drinking enough Gatorade."

Drummer Nathan Followill, their cousin in the Grammy Award-winning band, added in a separate Twitter message: "Not so good morning 4 me today. Ashamed & embarrassed by last night's fiasco."

The cancellation of the US tour was announced in a statement by the Nashville-based band on Monday.

It said the band members were "devastated, but in order to give their fans the shows they deserve, they need to take this break".

The band are to return to the road in Vancouver, Canada, on 28 September. The cancelled shows will not be rescheduled.

"Thanks to all our true fans for understanding and helping us through this hard time," Caleb Followill said on Twitter.

Kings of Leon, who are all family members and originally from Tennessee, have had huge global success with their singles including Use Somebody and Sex on Fire.

Talent powerhouse SM Entertainment has vowed to fight back and win against a court ruling last week which granted three members of boy band TVXQ partial victory in their request to nullify their exclusive contract with the agency.

In late July, TVXQ members Hero Jaejoong, Micky Yoochun and Xiah Junsu had applied for provisional disposition of their 13-year contract with SM to which a court ruled that the agency will not interfere in their individual activities.

“The recent decision has not taken the essential reasons and fundamental of the issue in to consideration,” SM started by saying in a press release on Monday. “We are sure that the court’s decision will change once we provide enough evidence which are looked into under the proper legal proceedings.”

SM also declared that they will ask the three for compensation amounting to over a total 2.5 million dollars for the losses and damage incurred upon the group and the agency with the ongoing legal action, should the court rule in favor of SM in its final verdict.

They went on to explain that the terms of the contracts had been adjusted every year in favor of the members and are now asking to be freed from them since they are starting to see success.

“This ruling will cause confusion in the entire entertainment industry and make it impossible to create a system where (agencies) will be able to upbring their stars with long-term prospects,” SM added.

The statement came just hours before a news conference set for later in the day where they plan to talk about their position in more detail.

TVXQ, who debuted in 2004 with album “Hug”, is one of Korea’s most successful K-pop groups. They are stars throughout Asia, reportedly having the largest fanbase in the world, and have enjoyed great success in the Japanese music industry in particular

Lawyers of SM Entertainment said:
“The court’s ruling for TVXQ is not fair. They didn’t consider the main reasons of the case. Their long contract is so that we can let them grow and have a long term deal with them. We want to look at their career in the long run and the court’s decision is not letting us do that. This is going to affect TVXQ’s international promotions. It’ll also create confusion for stars that want to have long term contracts and move on to bigger things later in their careers and for the companies that want to nurture talented people for a longer time. Not only that, it’ll have some unwanted consequences on exports of Korean music as well as other issues.”
They continued to say:
“Each year, we adjusted the contracts in favor of the members. Before this problem, the three members never complained about anything. Now that they have succeeded this much, they are complaining. They have just started to reach the top and now want to separate. Before a final decision is made, the three can do their personal and individual work. However, we do not acknowledge the right for the three to work as TVXQ”
Because of all this, TVXQ has not been able to work and SM Entertainment will seek to receive compensation for damages during the time that TVXQ has been inactive.

Salma Hayek ditches turkey for husband

SALMA Hayek has ditched traditional Christmas food for her husband.

The 'Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant' actress, who married French businessman Francois-Henry Pinault earlier this year, was shocked to discover her spouse feasts on luxury shellfish rather than turkey over the festive season in December but she has agreed to sample his menu.

The 43-year-old star said: "Eating oysters for Christmas is a weird one I didn't know about. I had no idea that would be happening.

"I'm used to turkey. It's going to take some getting used to."

Salma and the French billionaire tied the knot in a romantic civil ceremony in Paris, France, on Valentine's Day.

The couple wed for the second time in a star-studded ceremony in Venice, Italy, in April. Salma and Francois-Henri - who began dating in 2006 - called off their engagement in July 2008, but eventually decided to get back together after taking two romantic trips to the French capital.

Malaysia’s Education Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein has insisted that blaming students or their uniforms for sexual crimes is unfair as there is nothing sexy about school uniforms now worn by girls in government schools.

The Minister’s comments come after the little known National Islamic Students Association of Malaysia created a furor in the ultra conservative republic by suggesting that “the blouse encouraged rape and premarital sex”. (Or a bit like saying that a jewelers deserves to be robbed for having jewels on display, or that drivers of Mercs are simply asking for their cars to be nicked when they park ‘em in public).
